ELYRIA — A Sheffield Lake man is being held without bond following his arrest Thursday night on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after a domestic violence investigation on the city’s south side.
According to Elyria police, officers were dispatched around 7:25 p.m. on August 21 to the 1100 block of Garden Street for a reported domestic disturbance involving 25-year-old Deontae Delantonio Espada of Sheffield Lake.
Incident Details
The victim told police Espada grabbed her by the throat, pinned her against a refrigerator, and threw her onto the kitchen floor during an argument. She reported struggling to breathe during the confrontation. Witnesses at the residence, including family members, confirmed parts of her account. Several children were also present, police said.
Video Evidence Secured
Security camera footage from the property shows Espada allegedly grabbing the victim by the throat and forcing her up the driveway, according to police. Officers said the video has been entered into evidence and noted visible redness and marks on the victim’s neck consistent with her statement.
Espada Flees and Arrested Later
Before officers arrived, Espada reportedly fled the scene in a red Audi sedan. Police located him around 10:30 p.m. at a residence on Belmont Avenue, where he was arrested without incident.

Espada faces the following charges:
- Strangulation, Felony 2
- Domestic Violence, Misdemeanor 1
- Assault, Misdemeanor 1
- Unlawful Restraint, Misdemeanor 3
Espada was booked into the Lorain County Jail on August 22 and is being held under maximum security classification. Records show no bond or bail has been set.
Court Appearance Scheduled
Espada is scheduled to appear in Elyria Municipal Court on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. in courtroom CV.

Espada remains in custody at the Lorain County Jail pending his hearing. No further details about future court proceedings have been released.
