Self-Inflicted Injuries Delay Transport of Suspect in Elyria Custody Case

ELYRIA — A North Olmsted man was arrested Sunday evening after a reported disturbance during a custody exchange inside the Elyria Police Department lobby, according to a police report.

Jack Schidlowski, 44, was arrested on charges of unlawful restraint (M3) and obstructing official business (M2) following the incident.

What Police Say Happened

Officers were called around 5:30 p.m. on August 24, 2025, after dispatchers observed a disturbance in the front lobby on security cameras.

According to police, Schidlowski and a woman arrived at the station to complete a court-ordered custody exchange. Police say surveillance footage shows Schidlowski allegedly grabbing the child’s arm and attempting to pull the child away. The woman reportedly pushed him back and blocked his path as the confrontation continued in the lobby.

Officers separated both parties, interviewed them, reviewed custody documents, and examined the station’s security video before making the arrest.

Injuries and Treatment

According to the report, while Schidlowski was being transported, he began striking his forehead against the patrol car partition, causing visible injuries. Officers called Lifecare EMS, and he was treated at UH Elyria Medical Center before being booked into the Lorain County Jail.

Police said Schidlowski’s self-inflicted injuries delayed transport, which led to the additional charge of obstructing official business.

Case Status

Schidlowski is being held at the Lorain County Jail pending arraignment or posting bond.

Police said no other injuries were reported during the incident. The custody matter remains under review by the courts.
