One of Lorain’s most beloved gathering places is marking a major milestone. Skate World, the roller rink on West Erie Avenue, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and city leaders took time during Monday’s council meeting to honor the achievement.
Councilwoman Mary Springowski read a proclamation recognizing the rink for five decades of bringing families, friends, and neighbors together. Opened in 1975, Skate World quickly became a hub for birthday parties, school outings, and weekend fun. For many residents, it’s more than just a skating rink — it’s a place filled with memories that span generations.
Council members praised the role Skate World has played in Lorain’s community life, offering a safe and welcoming space for young people while also giving adults a chance to relive their childhood. The recognition highlighted how local businesses like Skate World become part of the fabric of the city, shaping its culture and identity.
As it turns 50, Skate World continues to operate as a family-run business, still drawing crowds for open skate nights, special events, and private parties. For those who grew up skating there and for new generations just learning to lace up, the anniversary is a reminder of how much one place can mean to a community.
Skate World will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a weekend of special events later this month. Festivities kick off Friday, September 26, with an adults-only skate night from 9–11 p.m. The celebration continues Sunday, September 28, featuring an Organ Jam Reunion with original organists Johnny Sharp and Michael Clemens from 2–6 p.m., followed by a retro-themed family skate session in the evening with free admission.
