The following press release was issued by the Elyria Police Department.

Hit-Skip Crash – Cleveland Street
Elyria, Ohio – January 16, 2026
On January 15, 2026, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Elyria Police officers responded to a report of a vehicle that had struck a building in the 100 block of Cleveland Street and left the scene. Upon arrival, officers confirmed that a white van had collided with the structure and departed prior to police arrival.
The Elyria Fire Department responded to assess the building for potential structural damage. No injuries were reported and no immediate hazards were identified.

Through the course of the investigation, officers identified the suspect vehicle as a 2006 white Chevrolet Express van. The registered owner, 48-year-old Scott Abbey, was contacted and admitted to being the driver involved in the crash.
Mr. Abbey was cited for Failure to Control (Elyria Codified Ordinance 333.025) and Failure to Stop After an Accident (Elyria Codified Ordinance 335.12). He was released on a summons to appear in Elyria Municipal Court.
