What We Know: Suspect Dies After Officer-Involved Shooting Linked to Elyria Robbery

A suspect involved in an armed robbery in Elyria died after being shot during an officer-involved shooting that followed a police pursuit on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, according to information released by the Elyria Police Department.

Elyria police officers were dispatched at approximately 3:02 p.m. to a reported aggravated robbery involving a firearm at 1547 West River Road North in Elyria. Investigators later identified a suspect vehicle, which was located in Lorain. With assistance from other law enforcement agencies, Elyria police initiated a pursuit that continued into North Olmsted.

During the attempt to take the suspect into custody, police reported that the suspect presented a handgun. In response to what authorities described as a deadly threat, an Elyria police officer discharged their firearm. No injuries were reported among Elyria officers, assisting officers, or civilians.

The suspect was taken into custody at the scene and transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Police stated the suspect’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

In a follow-up statement to media partners, Elyria police clarified that the suspect was fleeing in a privately owned vehicle and not an armored Brinks vehicle, addressing confusion that had circulated following the incident.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, a division of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, is conducting the independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting, while Elyria police continue to investigate the aggravated robbery. Authorities said no additional details will be released at this time to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

Police also stated there is no ongoing threat to the public. Additional information may be released as it becomes available.
