Lorain High Changes School Start Time One Day Before Classes Begin

LORAIN, Ohio — Lorain High School has changed the start and dismissal times for its instructional day, announcing the change just one day before ninth-grade students are scheduled to begin the new school year.

Effective immediately, the Lorain High School instructional day will run from 7:35 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The change means ninth-grade students reporting for their first day of school Wednesday, Aug. 19, are expected to be in their first-period classrooms by 7:35 a.m.

The school building will open at 7:05 a.m. Breakfast will be available from 7:05 to 7:25 a.m., while the cafeteria doors will remain open until 8 a.m.

Students arriving to first period after 7:35 a.m. will be considered tardy. Students who arrive after 8 a.m. will be required to check in through the school’s main office.

Lorain City Schools acknowledged the timing of the announcement and apologized for the short notice.

“We recognize that sharing this information just one day before the start of school may create challenges for students, families, and staff,” the district said in its announcement.

Families who use district transportation are encouraged to check their student’s bus information through the My Ride K-12 app. A student’s ID number is required to access bus stop locations and scheduled pickup and drop-off times.

The district is asking students, families and staff members to share the schedule change to help ensure those affected are aware of the new start time before classes begin Wednesday.
