Black River Landing breaks ground on new amphitheater; May 2026 opening targeted

LORAIN: The Lorain Port and Finance Authority held a groundbreaking Monday at Black River Landing to launch construction of a new permanent amphitheater. Executive Director Tiffany McClelland said the project has been years in the making and timed to replace the existing stage at the end of its lifespan. She told attendees the new stage is targeted to be finished in May 2026 and is intended to support current programming while allowing room to grow.

Project designers said the stage location and lawn were oriented to the hillside to improve sight lines and frame views of the Black River and the Charles Berry Bridge. They described the pavilion as a feature that signals activity during events while blending into the landscape when the venue is quiet.

Port board chair Brad Mullins thanked volunteers, staff, and community partners for moving the vision forward, calling the work part of positioning Lorain as a destination. Mayor Jack Bradley pointed to strong attendance at recent waterfront events and said the amphitheater will help connect the riverfront with Broadway and draw more visitors downtown. State Rep. Joe Miller noted bipartisan support that helped move the project forward. County commissioners joined local donors and volunteers at the ceremony.

According to Lorain County Government, the amphitheater is a $6.8 million project, with construction expected to be completed in 2026.

Speakers said the effort represents the first phase of a broader plan for the riverfront. Fundraising leaders encouraged local businesses and residents to participate in the next phase, which includes a green room to enhance the venue’s capabilities.

Event organizers said site fencing and construction mobilization begin immediately following the ceremony, with photo opportunities concluding the program.
