Advocate Submits Civil Rights Ordinances, Calls for Inclusive Future
LORAIN, OH — Local activist Brandon West appeared before Lorain City Council on July 21 to formally introduce two proposed ordinances aimed at protecting LGBTQIA+ residents from discrimination in housing, employment, and public services. West’s proposals were also submitted via email to council members, accompanied by a heartfelt letter outlining the urgent need for action.
“As it currently stands, it is still legal in Lorain to evict someone, deny them housing, or refuse to hire them simply for being LGBTQIA+,” West wrote. He emphasized that while some federal protections exist, Ohio law lacks comprehensive statewide safeguards, leaving many residents vulnerable.
The proposed legislation includes the creation of a new Civil Rights and Human Dignity Code and the establishment of a Human Rights Commission. The code would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. The commission would act as a local body to hear complaints and promote educational and community-based resolutions.
West addressed the council directly during the public comment portion of the meeting, linking Lorain’s self-proclaimed status as an “international city” to its responsibility to protect all people. “Being an international city can mean more than just honoring where people come from. It could also reflect how we treat each other today,” he said.
Councilwoman Sylvia Duvall praised West’s activism and encouraged him to contact the local fair housing program, noting that some protections may already exist under federal law. Councilman Mr. Mrowski commended West for being “a voice for people hidden behind their fears.”
West’s proposals follow a wave of grassroots efforts across Ohio to expand LGBTQIA+ protections. He has played a role in similar legislation in both Lorain and Cuyahoga counties, particularly around efforts to ban conversion therapy.
Both ordinances are now on record with the council. West has requested meetings with individual members to discuss next steps and potential sponsorships.
