Cold Weather Advisory Prompts Sheriff’s Office Partnership With Gathering Hope House

LORAIN COUNTY — With a multi-day cold snap expected to begin Friday night and continue through Tuesday afternoon, the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office is working to support residents who may struggle during dangerous temperatures.

Major A. J. Torres and Corrections Sergeant Chelsea Irish visited Gathering Hope House earlier this week as part of an ongoing effort to assist vulnerable community members during extreme weather. Sgt. Irish delivered handmade blankets created by her grandmother, Sue Read. The blankets will be distributed through the center to individuals who need help staying warm.

Sheriff Jack M. Hall said the partnership underscores the essential role Gathering Hope House plays for residents experiencing mental health challenges or housing instability. He emphasized that the advisory is a reminder for the community to stay alert and connected to available support services.

Gathering Hope House Executive Director Whitney Oliver expressed appreciation for the blankets and noted that winter conditions create added strain for many of the adults they serve. The organization provides daily programming, hot meals, winter clothing, laundry facilities, showers, and connections to shelter and other resources.

The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to monitor weather updates, check on neighbors, and seek assistance if needed as temperatures fall.
