Construction Begins to Fix Lorain’s Most Dangerous Intersection at Henderson and Colorado

LORAIN — After years of documented crashes, public safety concerns, and planning, the City of Lorain has officially begun construction on a $735,000 safety overhaul at the intersection of Henderson Drive and Colorado Avenue—an area now recognized as one of the most dangerous in the city.

Between 2019 and 2021, the intersection was the site of 30 crashes, including nine injuries. More than half were rear-end collisions, and nearly half involved turning movements, especially from the northbound slip lane that connects Henderson Drive to Colorado Avenue. The city’s safety study also noted semi-trucks overturning while attempting the turn, spilling cargo into oncoming traffic lanes and compounding the danger.

In 2020, the location was ranked #655 on ODOT’s Urban Intersection Safety Priority List, validating its high crash frequency and injury rate.

The city is now addressing these issues head-on.

The construction project, formally known as LOR-611 Colorado Reconstruction (PID #118175), is largely funded through the Ohio Department of Transportation, which is covering 90% of the $735,246.44 cost. Improvements include:

  • Removal of the slip lane and concrete island, which currently channels right-turn traffic directly into an active lane.
  • Installation of a dedicated right-turn lane with improved alignment.
  • Full signal replacement using mast arms and backplates to enhance visibility.
  • Pedestrian safety upgrades, including ADA-compliant curb ramps, new crosswalks, pedestrian signal heads, and push-button systems.

According to a recent post by the City of Lorain on Facebook, construction has officially started, with Ohio Edison installing four new power poles in preparation for signal and utility work. These installations were made near Wendy’s, Taco Bell, and Offshore Pub and Grub.

Work will continue in phases through early 2026, with project closeout scheduled for February 11, 2026. The effort aligns with Lorain’s Vision Zero Policy, a citywide strategy to eliminate traffic-related fatalities through better road design and planning.

Officials say the changes will not only reduce crash rates and severity but will make crossing the intersection significantly safer for pedestrians.
