LORAIN, OH — A preliminary report from the Lorain County Coroner indicates that 30-year-old Emily Simmons may have been the shooter in what authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide that left two people dead on Lorain’s west side.

Police were called to a home in the 200 block of West 29th Street on the evening of May 31 after family members reported they had been unable to reach a resident for several days. Upon entering the residence, officers discovered two individuals deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

The Lorain County Coroner’s Office later identified the deceased as Emily Simmons and Anthony Coonrod, both residents of the home. According to the coroner’s report, Coonrod, 63, died from multiple gunshot wounds and his death has been classified as an apparent homicide. Simmons was found to have died from a single gunshot wound, listed as an apparent suicide. Both designations remain pending further investigation.

Coonrod was a retired corrections officer who had served more than three decades with the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office. Simmons had multiple felony charges pending in Lorain County at the time of her death, including three counts of felonious assault.

Police have not publicly discussed any motive, and there has been no official statement detailing the events that led to the shooting. No other individuals are believed to be involved.

The case remains under active investigation. Lorain Daily will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
