UPDATE: New video from a different angle gives more context to this article.
A man running for Lorain City Council is now at the center of controversy after an altercation at MAHD House Bar and Grille. The incident has sparked conversation across the city and raised questions about conduct, public safety, and what people expect from those who want to represent them in office.
Allegations from the Bar and Witnesses
According to a recent podcast and a public Facebook post from MAHD House Bar and Grille, the man — identified by others as Aaron Knapp — was allegedly acting in a disruptive and unusual way before the fight began.
Several people claimed Knapp was pacing around the bar, pretending to be on phone calls, and making others feel uncomfortable. It was also alleged that he made inappropriate remarks to a young woman who was with her boyfriend and friends.
According to the podcast, when the woman ignored him, Knapp reportedly continued speaking to her. This led to her boyfriend confronting him. At this point, the staff at MAHD House Bar and Grille intervened.
Refusal to Leave and Escalation
In a statement posted by MAHD House Bar and Grille, staff said they asked Knapp to leave “multiple times.” The bar claims Knapp refused and argued with them, saying they had “no legal right” to ask him to leave.
The staff say they reminded him that they could bar anyone from the premises. Things escalated when, according to podcast hosts and the bar, Knapp allegedly became physically aggressive after a patron tried to escort him out.
One staff member, referred to as Andy in the podcast, was reportedly bitten by Knapp during the scuffle. Witnesses also claimed Knapp tried to strike him with a bottle. Another individual was said to have physically dragged Knapp out of the establishment during the incident.
The podcast described multiple physical altercations between Knapp and others, including pulling out part of a man’s beard. MAHD House Bar and Grille stated that they “tried to show him grace by not calling the police” but ultimately barred him from returning.
Knapp’s Public Response
Knapp later released a public statement on his Facebook group, Lorain City Politics Unplugged. In his post, he acknowledged the situation and accepted some responsibility, writing:
“I take responsibility for my actions that contributed to this unfortunate situation. I am deeply sorry for the disruption it caused to the patrons and the establishment.”
However, Knapp also claimed he was assaulted during the incident and said he suffered a concussion. He criticized the decision to share video footage of the altercation, saying the video did not show the full story — including what he described as the physical assault against him.
Knapp added that he would no longer participate in nightlife activities and plans to focus on his health, family, and campaign. He also called for a broader conversation about community safety and the role businesses play in protecting patrons.
“As a potential City Council member, I believe in open dialogue and accountability,” he wrote. “My experience highlights the need for these discussions in Lorain.”
Bar’s Final Word
In response to Knapp’s post, MAHD House Bar and Grille reiterated their claim that he refused to leave and initiated the escalation. Their statement said:
“He can spin it however he wants, but he clearly started [it] and then refused to leave… When a customer dragged him out, he started swinging.”
The bar also wished Knapp “good luck” and confirmed that he is barred permanently from returning.
Public Reactions and Questions Raised
The incident has sparked a wide range of reactions in the Lorain community. Some residents are calling for more information. Others are asking whether a person running for office should be held to a higher standard, regardless of fault.
Meanwhile, others have expressed concern about the use of video clips to shape public opinion, with some arguing that context matters — especially in heated situations.
Still, the core of the debate seems to focus on two key questions:
- What actually happened that night at MAHD House Bar and Grille?
- And what should voters expect from candidates seeking public office?
Looking Ahead
As the campaign season moves forward, it remains to be seen how — or if — this incident will impact Knapp’s run for Lorain City Council. For now, he continues to express interest in serving the city and says he is committed to “learning from this experience.”
MAHD House Bar and Grille stands by its version of events and maintains its decision to bar Knapp from the premises.
Editor’s Note: Aaron Knapp was brought on as a probationary, unpaid staff writer for Lorain Daily. He is no longer affiliated with the publication.
Andy wouldnt hurt a fly so to see this happen to someone so sweet like him by someone whos running for the city is disgusting.
You will not have my vote.
With a felon in the White House…many people may think he did nothing wrong. The Founders of The Constitution felt strongly about people in authority positions should hold the finest of human traits with common sense and knowledge.
Knapp got what he deserved.
