Eleven dogs were removed from a Grafton property on January 24, 2026, following an investigation by the Humane Investigations Department of the Friendship Animal Protective League, with assistance from the Lorain County Sheriff’s Department.

According to FAPL, humane agents executed a search warrant at the property after receiving reports concerning dogs being housed outdoors during extreme winter weather. At the time of the investigation, a severe winter storm was approaching, with wind chill temperatures dropping below zero.
Upon arrival, agents found 11 dogs living outside and tethered on heavy tow chains. While dog houses were present, FAPL stated the shelters were insufficient for the extreme weather conditions. The dogs did not have access to unfrozen drinking water, and temperature readings taken inside the dog houses indicated conditions unsafe for prolonged exposure. Several dogs were also observed with worn teeth, which agents said was consistent with long-term chewing on chains.
Due to the lack of adequate shelter and water during extreme cold, all 11 dogs were removed from the property and impounded at FAPL’s shelter in Elyria. FAPL reported that the dogs have since received veterinary evaluations and appropriate care.

During the execution of the search warrant, agents also discovered items described as consistent with dog fighting activity. Because the matter remains under active investigation, FAPL said additional details cannot be released at this time.
A probable cause hearing will be scheduled to determine custody of the dogs as the case proceeds through the court system. As of now, no further information has been released regarding potential charges, arrests, or the identity of the property owner.
FAPL stated that failure to provide adequate protection, shelter, and water for animals during extreme weather conditions is a violation of Ohio law. The organization noted that it is the only humane society in Lorain County with authority to enforce Ohio’s animal cruelty and neglect laws.
Donations and animal care supplies to support the dogs’ ongoing care can be made directly to the shelter or through FAPL’s website.
