The Elyria Police Department is advising residents and motorists of a temporary road closure on the city’s east side due to an active police operation.

According to police, East Avenue is closed between 16th Street and George Avenue as officers conduct an ongoing tactical operation in the area. Residents may notice an increased police presence as law enforcement works to secure the scene and continue the investigation.
Authorities emphasized that the activity is precautionary and focused on public safety. Police confirmed that two suspects are already in custody and stated there is no immediate threat to the public.

“The investigation is evolving rapidly,” Elyria Police Chief James Welsh said in a public advisory, noting that officers remain actively engaged as the situation develops.
The department is asking the public to avoid the area while the closure remains in effect and to cooperate with any instructions from officers on scene. Updates will be provided through the Elyria Police Department’s official social media channels as additional information becomes available.
This remains an active situation, and further details will be released when appropriate.
