ELYRIA, Ohio — An Elyria man is facing a felony charge following a reported domestic incident Wednesday evening in which police say a 911 call was allegedly prevented.

According to an Elyria Police Department report, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of Columbus Street at approximately 7:36 p.m. on January 28, 2026, in response to a reported assault. Following their investigation, police arrested Edwin Burgos, 35, who had been staying at the residence.
Police say the complainant, an adult male who lives in the home, reported that an argument escalated into a physical confrontation. The complainant told officers he was slapped across the face, shoved over a small table, and later grabbed by the throat. He also reported that while attempting to call 911, Burgos allegedly took his phone and destroyed it by throwing it to the ground and stomping on it, preventing the emergency call from being completed.
A second adult in the home told police she did not witness a physical confrontation but said she overheard a disturbance while she was in the bathroom with a child and heard multiple objects falling to the floor.
When interviewed by police, Burgos denied any physical altercation and denied damaging the phone. He told officers he confronted the complainant after hearing that his niece had been bullied.

Based on statements collected at the scene, officers arrested Burgos on one felony count of disrupting public service, which under Ohio law includes interfering with an emergency call. He was also charged with misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor criminal damaging.
Jail records show Burgos was booked into the Lorain County Jail at approximately 3:36 a.m. on January 29, 2026. He is being held on a total bond amount of $1,750, which includes two bonds eligible for 10 percent or cash surety and one charge carrying no bond. Jail officials listed Burgos as a new arrest with a minimum classification.
Burgos was scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. on January 29, 2026. Information regarding the outcome of that hearing was not available at the time of publication.
Police did not indicate whether any injuries were documented or whether medical treatment was required. The case remains pending in Elyria Municipal Court, and no further details were released as of this report.
