Elyria Man Injured, Faces Third OVI Charge After Striking Dirt Mound; Second Occupant Also Injured

ELYRIA, Ohio – An Elyria man sustained head lacerations and was transported to the hospital Tuesday night after the truck he was driving left the roadway and struck a dirt mound. A second occupant in the vehicle also suffered lacerations. The driver, identified as William Jones, was subsequently arrested at the hospital for Operating a Vehicle Impaired (OVI) in what marks his third such charge, according to court records.

On Tuesday, June 11, 2025, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Officers Csata and Gregory were dispatched to the area of Reaser Point Crossing and East Broad Street following a report of a single-vehicle accident. Arriving on scene, officers located a black Ford F-150 resting approximately 500 feet south of East Broad Street with significant disabling damage, having reportedly driven off the roadway and collided with a dirt mound.

The driver was identified as William Jones, 32, of Elyria. Officers observed that both Jones and his passenger had lacerations to their heads. Officers also noted signs of impairment from Jones, including a strong odor of alcohol, slurred speech, and bloodshot, watery eyes. When asked if he had been consuming alcohol, Jones reportedly responded bluntly, “for sure.”

Both individuals were transported to UH Elyria Medical Center for evaluation of their injuries. While at the hospital, and following a field sobriety test, officers placed Jones under arrest for OVI. He was the sole individual arrested in connection with this incident.

Further investigation revealed that Jones has two prior OVI convictions: one from Elyria Municipal Court in 2013 and another from Oberlin Municipal Court in 2022.

Jones was provided with his traffic citations and is scheduled to appear in Elyria Municipal Court on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
