Elyria Man With Eight Prior OVI Convictions Arrested After Crash, Firearms Found in Vehicle

ELYRIA — A 53-year-old man with a history of impaired driving offenses was arrested Thursday evening following a reported crash in the area of Chestnut Commons Drive, according to Elyria Police.

Officers were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. on May 14, 2026, after receiving reports of a white Chevrolet work van being driven erratically, including traveling the wrong way, before being involved in a crash. Witnesses told police the driver left the scene on foot after the incident.

Police later located the vehicle parked near the Discount Drug Mart at 110 Chestnut Commons Drive and identified the driver as Scott Kohman of Conesville, Ohio.

According to the police report, officers observed signs of impairment, including slurred speech, glassy eyes, and unsteady movement. Kohman initially denied being involved in a crash but told officers he had consumed alcohol earlier, stating he had “two” drinks.

Investigators determined the crash had occurred nearby, and witnesses reported the driver appeared unable to stand without assistance. Kohman was taken into custody at the scene.

During an inventory search of the vehicle, officers located several loaded firearms inside the van. The weapons were secured and entered into evidence.

Police said Kohman was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, refusing a chemical test, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, failure to stop after an accident, right of way violations, and driving under suspension. Authorities also confirmed he had active warrants related to prior traffic offenses, including failure to control, driving under suspension, and leaving the scene of an accident on private property.

According to police, Kohman has eight prior OVI convictions and was driving under suspension at the time of the incident.

He was transported to the Elyria Police Department and later booked into the Lorain County Jail, where he was held pending an initial court appearance.
