Elyria Police Department Receives Third Consecutive CALEA Accreditation

The Elyria Police Department has earned full accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), its third consecutive recognition since first achieving the status in 2017. The award, considered the gold standard in public safety, confirms the department’s compliance with rigorous national benchmarks for best practices, accountability, and community trust.

The accreditation, valid for four years, requires the department to maintain continuous compliance with current and future CALEA standards. The process involved a comprehensive review of policies, procedures, and operations, as well as on-site assessments conducted by CALEA evaluators.

“This milestone is a testament to the hard work, professionalism, and dedication of every member of my staff,” said Chief James P. Welsh. “From our sworn officers to our civilian staff, each played a vital role in this process, demonstrating leadership, accountability, and commitment to excellence.”

Chief Welsh expressed appreciation to Mayor Kevin Brubaker, Safety Service Director Chris Pyanowski, Elyria Law Director Amanda Deery, Elyria Municipal Court, Lorain County Prosecutor Tony Cillo, Elyria City Schools, Lorain County Children Services, St. Jude’s Block Watch, and the Lorain County Community College Police Academy for their support during the accreditation process.

He also thanked the citizens of Elyria, pledging that the department will continue to provide professional police services in partnership with the community to enhance quality of life. For more information, contact Chief James P. Welsh at 440-326-1339 or welsh@cityofelyria.org.
