The Elyria Police Department is investigating a report of shots fired that occurred during the early morning hours of Thursday, January 1, 2026.

According to police, the incident was reported in the 1800 block of Middle Avenue. No injuries were reported.
Patrol officers and detectives responded to the scene and remain actively involved in the investigation. Police said they are working to identify and arrest those responsible. Authorities emphasized that discharging a firearm within Elyria city limits is a criminal offense.

Elyria Police Chief James Welsh said shots fired calls and non-fatal shootings receive the same level of investigative resources as homicide cases. Welsh emphasized that these incidents are extremely dangerous and that many end without injuries due to chance alone. He said the department’s goal is to identify, charge and arrest those responsible as quickly as possible as part of its ongoing violent crime reduction strategy.
