Emergency Crews Respond After Car Goes Off Route 2 in Amherst

AMHERST — Emergency crews were called to the scene Saturday evening after a vehicle went off Route 2 before the barricades and landed in a creek below near the North Main Street bridge in Amherst.

According to tow truck driver David L. Vaughn Jr., who assisted with recovery, the driver was transported from the scene with non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

The incident caused a temporary traffic backup on Route 2, but the highway has since reopened in all directions. Several tow trucks and first responders worked to remove the vehicle from the area.

Witnesses reported that the car appeared to have gone over the guardrail before coming to rest in the creek west of the bridge. The vehicle sustained front-end damage, but no visible damage to the barricades was reported.

Officials have not released the driver’s identity or any further details regarding the cause of the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
