Police in Elyria are investigating a shooting that occurred Monday evening during a large disturbance involving approximately 40 people.
Officers were dispatched shortly before 9 p.m. after receiving reports of a physical fight taking place in a residential area. While responding, additional calls came in indicating that shots had been fired.
Upon arrival, officers found a large crowd spread along the street and nearby properties. Individuals at the scene provided limited information. Most claimed they had not witnessed the shooting and said they were only observing the situation.
One person reported hearing multiple gunshots from the direction of nearby backyards.
Not long after officers arrived, Elyria Police were notified that a 22-year-old man had arrived at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center with gunshot wounds. The victim told police he had been in a vehicle leaving the area when he was struck. His condition was listed as stable.
Police located several shell casings across multiple lawns and driveways. Three parked vehicles were also found to have been hit by gunfire.
A witness informed officers that several individuals were seen running through backyards and later entering a vehicle parked nearby.
Detectives responded later in the night to begin interviews. The case remains open as investigators continue to gather information.
