Lorain City Schools Earn 2 Stars on State Report Card

Lorain City Schools received an overall rating of 2 stars out of 5 on the 2025 Ohio School Report Card, a mark that means the district “needs support to meet state standards.” The rating reflects a slight decline from last year’s 2.5-star score and places Lorain among the lowest-performing districts in Lorain County.

The district’s weakest areas were achievement, graduation, early literacy, and gap closing, each receiving just 1 star. State data shows only 80 percent of Lorain students graduate within four years, and early literacy remains a significant challenge for grades K–3. Chronic absenteeism continues to weigh heavily on performance, with nearly six in ten students (59.2%) classified as chronically absent.

Lorain earned 2 stars for progress—indicating students are not making the academic growth expected—and 2 stars in college, career, workforce, and military readiness. That rating shows students meet minimum state standards for post-graduation preparation but fall behind many neighboring districts.

Within Lorain County, Lorain City Schools trailed districts such as Avon Lake, Avon, and Amherst, which earned between 4 and 5 stars overall. Elyria, facing its own challenges, posted 3.5 stars overall, still ahead of Lorain.

Enrollment in the district is reported at 6,070 students across 15 schools. Teachers average 16 years of experience with an average salary of $78,303, though the district lists no lead or senior teachers.

The latest data comes as Lorain City Schools had Issue 21 — a 4.97-mill permanent improvement levy — on the November ballot to fund facility repairs and safety upgrades. The levy was pitched as essential for aging buildings, but voters rejected it, with about 44.7% in favor and 55.3% opposed.
