Lorain Community Donates Ballistic Vests to Auxiliary Police Officers

LORAIN, OH — The City of Lorain and the Lorain Police Department formally recognized a group of local organizations on April 17 for donating new ballistic vests to the city’s Auxiliary Police Unit.

The ceremony, held at Lorain City Hall, brought together city officials, law enforcement, and community members to highlight the collaborative effort behind the donation. Thanks to contributions from the Knights of Columbus – Columbia Club, American Legion Post 30, and Fraternal Order of Police Associates (FOPA) Lorain Lodge #46, 14 high-quality ballistic vests were purchased for volunteer officers.

The vests match those worn by full-time Lorain officers and offer the same level of protection. Funding also came from the Lorain Police Department and the Auxiliary Unit itself.

FOPA Lodge #46 organized much of the campaign, collecting donations and working with police and Auxiliary leaders to secure the equipment. Sgt. Mark Tomlin led the department’s effort to research and select the vests, ensuring they provided both safety and uniform compatibility.

Auxiliary Chief Steve Hernandez called the vests “a symbol of support and trust from our community” during the recognition event. The idea for the campaign began when Jon Andrews of the Columbia Club reached out to then-Auxiliary Chief James Malick to discuss the possibility.

American Legion Post 30 President Jerimiah Garza also attended the event with several Post members, alongside Auxiliary officers, FOPA members, and Lorain Police representatives.

Mayor Jack Bradley and Police Chief James McCann were present to show their appreciation for the community’s involvement.

The event marked a moment of unity and support between residents and those who volunteer to serve and protect.
