VERMILION — Lorain County has taken a key step toward developing a future wastewater facility with the purchase of land in Vermilion, positioning the county for long-term infrastructure planning in the western portion of the region.
County commissioners recently approved the acquisition of two parcels with frontage on Brownhelm Station Road and Sunnyside Road. The purchase, totaling $1.495 million, includes an initial $25,000 earnest deposit and allows the county to begin further evaluation of the site before finalizing the deal.
The property was identified through a broader site selection process that evaluated multiple locations. County officials worked with an outside brokerage and engineering partners to review potential options, ultimately determining the Vermilion site offered the most suitable conditions for development.
Officials described the planned project as a wastewater resource recovery facility, a term used by federal regulators to reflect modern treatment systems designed not only to process wastewater but also to recover reusable resources where possible.
The land purchase does not finalize the project but marks an early phase in the process. The agreement includes a 120-day due diligence period, along with optional extensions, giving the county time to further study the property, assess feasibility, and confirm it meets engineering and regulatory requirements.
County officials indicated the facility is part of a broader effort to address future wastewater needs across western Lorain County. While detailed plans have not yet been approved, the project is expected to play a role in supporting regional infrastructure as demand and regulatory requirements continue to evolve.
Additional details, including design, capacity, cost, and timeline, have not yet been finalized and are expected to be addressed as planning moves forward.
At this stage, the land acquisition represents a foundational step, allowing the county to secure a potential site while continuing to evaluate long-term solutions for wastewater management in the area.
