Lorain County Sheriff’s Office Launches Holiday Crackdown on Impaired Driving

The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office is stepping up traffic enforcement this Independence Day weekend with a new countywide campaign aimed at curbing impaired driving and reducing crashes.

Funded by the Ohio Traffic Safety Office, the initiative will run from Thursday, July 3 through Sunday, July 6, covering all state routes and county roads. The campaign is part of a broader effort to address dangerous driving behaviors during one of the year’s busiest travel periods.

“We want everyone to enjoy the holiday responsibly and make it to their destinations safely,” said Sheriff Jack Hall. “Safe driving saves lives.”

The campaign comes in response to alarming data. In 2024, Lorain County saw 25 fatal crashes—up from 20 the previous year. Thirteen of those were alcohol-related, highlighting the continued risks posed by impaired driving.

But the enforcement efforts won’t end with the holiday weekend. A second wave of traffic safety operations is scheduled for July 21 through July 25, expanding the focus to include speeding, distracted driving, and child restraint violations.

Sheriff Hall is calling on all drivers to stay alert—not just during the holidays, but every day. “We’re counting on the community to do their part,” he said.
