Elyria Man Arrested After Reckless Driving and Hostile Encounter

ELYRIA, OHIO — A 31-year-old Elyria man was arrested Sunday evening after police say he drove recklessly through a residential neighborhood and escalated a domestic call by interfering with officers.

Leonis C. McGilvery was taken into custody around 8:30 p.m. on July 28 after allegedly speeding down Cambridge Avenue, squealing his tires, and pulling into a driveway where Elyria officers were responding to a reported domestic disturbance.

Police had been dispatched after a woman called to report that McGilvery was harassing her. Upon arrival, officers observed McGilvery’s black Dodge Charger traveling at high speed through the neighborhood. He stopped near the home and began shouting at officers.

As police attempted to speak with the woman, identified as Rickyisha K. Kimbro, McGilvery reversed his vehicle toward them. One officer drew his weapon in response. McGilvery then shouted profanities, including, “I’m good, f*** 12,” according to the report. The term “12” is commonly used as slang to refer to police.

The incident occurred just days after two Lorain police officers were shot in an ambush, adding to heightened tension among local law enforcement agencies.

Police say McGilvery continued yelling and refused to comply with commands. He was eventually handcuffed and placed in the back of a cruiser, where he reportedly laughed erratically and remained combative.

Kimbro told officers the dispute had been verbal only and that she left the home voluntarily. She declined medical attention and mentioned that McGilvery may have mental health concerns.

McGilvery was charged with Obstructing Official Business, a misdemeanor of the second degree, and Reckless Operation, a minor misdemeanor. He was transported to the Lorain County Jail. The incident was recorded on officers’ body-worn cameras.
