Elyria — A Lorain man was arrested September 20 following a traffic stop on SR57 near Gulf Road, where police say they recovered a loaded handgun and prescription pills.
According to Elyria police, Demetrius Duran Bennett, 20, was pulled over after allegedly cutting off another vehicle and failing to signal lane changes. Officers reported he was driving under suspension and refused repeated commands to exit the vehicle, becoming uncooperative until he was physically removed and detained.
A search of the vehicle revealed a Ruger LC9S 9mm handgun loaded with cartridges in the magazine under the driver’s seat. Police also found a small baggie containing two pills later identified as buprenorphine.
Bennett was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and obstructing official business.
The stop occurred on a busy stretch of SR57 near Gulf Road, a heavily traveled route through Elyria. Police said no injuries were reported. Bennett was transported to the Lorain County Jail pending arraignment in Elyria Municipal Court.
