Lorain Woman Fatally Struck by Train on Leavitt Road

LORAIN — A 64-year-old woman was killed early Wednesday morning after being struck by a train on Leavitt Road between Edith Street and West 21st Street, according to the Lorain Police Department.

Officers responded around 1:30 a.m. to reports of a pedestrian hit by a westbound Norfolk Southern train. When they arrived at the scene, they found Sharon Matusiak of Lorain unresponsive near the tracks. Lifecare paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

Preliminary findings indicate that Matusiak was walking on or near the tracks at the time of the collision. Investigators have confirmed that the railroad crossing’s gates and signals were working properly during the incident.

The Lorain Police Traffic Bureau and Norfolk Southern Police both responded and launched separate investigations. The area was closed for about two hours while officers processed the scene and railway personnel conducted inspections.

The case remains under investigation by the Lorain Police Department and the Lorain County Coroner’s Office. Authorities ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has relevant information to contact the Lorain Police Traffic Bureau at 440-204-2115.
