A 25-year-old man has died following an early morning shooting in Elyria that is now under investigation by the Elyria Police Department.
Officers were dispatched around 2:50 a.m. Sunday, March 15, to the area of 16th Street near Middle Avenue after receiving a report of a shooting. Shortly after the initial call, staff from University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center contacted police to report that a 25-year-old man had arrived at the hospital suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police responded both to the reported scene and the hospital as the situation began to unfold.
According to investigators, officers at the scene made contact with a 54-year-old man who reported that his red truck had broken down in the area. The man told police he was sitting inside the vehicle when a white SUV carrying several individuals pulled up nearby.
Authorities say the 25-year-old man exited the SUV and approached the truck while holding an item in his hand. The man then opened the passenger-side door of the truck. During the interaction that followed, the 25-year-old man was shot.
After the shooting, the injured man returned to the SUV and was transported by the vehicle’s occupants to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he later died at the hospital from his injuries.
Detectives with the Elyria Police Department’s Detective Bureau responded to the scene along with the Lorain County Coroner’s Office as part of the investigation. Authorities say detectives have interviewed the 54-year-old man as well as the individuals who were inside the SUV.
Officials said the case was reviewed in consultation with the Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office. At this time, no criminal charges have been filed.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing, and charges could still be considered as detectives continue reviewing evidence.
The identity of the man who died has not yet been released while authorities work to notify his next of kin.
Police are asking anyone who may have information about the incident to contact the Elyria Police Department Detective Bureau. Additional information may be released as the investigation continues.
