Man Found and Arrested After Baseball Bat Threat and High-Speed Chase

An Elyria man is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning on two felony charges stemming from a June 7 incident that began as a reported domestic threat and escalated into a high-speed pursuit through Lorain County.

Jay A. Fletcher, 41, was taken into custody on June 10 after an arrest warrant was issued by Elyria Municipal Court. He was booked into the Lorain County Jail in the early hours of June 11.

The charges against Fletcher include failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, a third-degree felony, and obstructing official business, a fifth-degree felony. Both charges are tied to an incident on Phillip Court in Elyria, where officers initially responded to a report of a man threatening someone with a baseball bat.

According to police radio traffic and witness accounts, the suspect fled the scene in a silver BMW, triggering a multi-agency chase that reached speeds of over 80 miles per hour. The pursuit traveled through several jurisdictions, including Lorain and Amherst, before the vehicle was last seen heading westbound on Interstate 90. At one point during the chase, the suspect vehicle reportedly struck another car near the intersection of Lake Avenue and Route 113.

The BMW involved was previously registered to a Westlake resident, but no arrests had been confirmed at the time of the chase.

Fletcher’s arraignment is scheduled for June 11 at 8:55 a.m. at the Lorain County Jail. As of now, no plea has been entered and bond has not been set. He remains in custody and is classified under minimum security.
