A Lorain police sergeant has been placed on administrative leave after an off-duty crash involving a city-owned vehicle. According to a report by the Chronicle-Telegram, the incident involved Sergeant Eric Rivera and happened while he was off duty.
The crash took place on Long Avenue and damaged two vehicles and a shed. The vehicle Rivera was driving was a 2020 Dodge Charger issued by the police department. After the crash, Rivera reportedly left the scene. The department has not released additional details about how the incident was discovered or whether anyone was injured.
The Lorain Police Department has started an internal investigation into the matter. For now, Rivera has been removed from duty while that investigation takes place. It’s not yet known if criminal charges will be filed or if further action will be taken by the department.
This is the latest in a series of incidents drawing attention to the Lorain Police Department. In recent years, there have been other cases involving off-duty behavior by officers that led to disciplinary action or criminal charges.
No public statements have been made by Sergeant Rivera or his legal representation. The department has also not provided a timeline for when the investigation will be completed.
More updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
