Ohio Senate Bill 50 would let 14 and 15 year olds work later during the school year

Ohio lawmakers have passed Senate Bill 50, a proposal that would allow 14 and 15 year olds to work later in the evenings during the school year. The bill now heads to Governor Mike DeWine for a final decision.

Right now, federal and state rules say teens in this age group cannot work past 7 p.m. on school nights. They can work until 9 p.m. only during the summer months. Senate Bill 50 would let them work until 9 p.m. all year if a parent or guardian signs a permission form.

Supporters of the bill say many teens want more hours and that businesses have trouble filling evening shifts. They believe the change gives families more flexibility and helps local employers.

Critics warn that federal law has not changed and still requires a 7 p.m. cutoff during the school year. They say employers would still need to follow the stricter federal rule unless Congress updates national labor standards. Others worry that later shifts on school nights could lead to less sleep, harder mornings, and added pressure on students who already manage homework and activities.

Senate Bill 50 has passed both the Ohio Senate and House and is now waiting on Governor Mike DeWine’s desk. If he signs it, the new state rules would take effect, although employers would still need to follow the stricter federal limits unless those change. For now, teens, parents, and employers are waiting to see his decision.
