Elyria police are investigating a hit-skip crash that left a 22-year-old bicyclist seriously injured early Monday morning. Officers were called at 7:02 a.m. on November 17 to the area of Reaser Pointe Crossing, just south of East Broad Street, after a 911 caller reported a man lying in a field with a damaged bicycle nearby.

When officers arrived, they found the victim in need of immediate medical attention. Police said the man’s injuries and the condition of the bicycle indicated he had been struck by a vehicle. LifeCare EMS transported him to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center with serious injuries.
Detectives began investigating and learned the victim had been riding home from work in the Chestnut Commons area. Using his direction of travel and the estimated time he left work, investigators were able to establish his likely route and place him in the area of the crash between about 11:30 and 11:35 p.m. the previous night. That timeline helped detectives identify a vehicle of interest.

On November 18, detectives located the vehicle at a residence on Amalfi Road in North Ridgeville. According to police, the car showed front-end and windshield damage consistent with the crash. The 20-year-old vehicle owner admitted to driving in the area the previous night and acknowledged he failed to stop after striking something.
Police impounded the vehicle for evidence processing. No charges have been filed as of the latest update, and the case remains under active investigation. Detectives will present their findings to the prosecutor’s office for review and consideration of criminal charges.
As of the most recent information, the victim remains hospitalized with serious injuries. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Lieutenant Aaron Varga at 440-326-1335 or at varga@cityofelyria.org.
