Police have identified the man who died following an early morning shooting in Elyria over the weekend.
According to the Elyria Police Department, the victim has been identified as Nicholas Burkholder, 25, of Elyria. Burkholder died after a shooting that occurred during the early morning hours of March 15 in the area of 16th Street near Middle Avenue.
Police say officers were dispatched to the area at approximately 2:50 a.m. on March 15 for a report of a shooting. Shortly after the initial call, representatives from University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center contacted police to report that a 25-year-old male had arrived at the hospital suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers were then dispatched both to the reported scene and to the hospital.
Investigators said officers responding to the area of 16th Street made contact with a 54-year-old man who reported that his red truck had broken down nearby. According to the man, he was sitting inside the vehicle when a white SUV occupied by several individuals pulled up in the area.
Police said a 25-year-old man exited the SUV, approached the truck while holding an item in his hand, and opened the passenger-side door of the vehicle. An interaction then occurred that resulted in the man being shot.
Following the shooting, the injured man returned to the SUV and was transported by the occupants to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center for treatment. Despite medical intervention, Burkholder later died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.
The Elyria Police Department Detective Bureau and the Lorain County Coroner’s Office are investigating the incident. Detectives have interviewed the 54-year-old man as well as the occupants of the SUV involved.
After consultation with the Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office, no criminal charges have been filed at this time. Police say the investigation remains ongoing and charges could be considered after detectives complete their investigation and review the available evidence.
