Police Say Elyria Woman Hit Man in Front of Child Over Messy House

An Elyria woman was arrested Saturday afternoon after police say she hit a man during an argument about the house not being clean enough.

According to the Elyria Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call just after 12:30 p.m. on April 19 at a home on Scott Court. When they arrived, they found a man outside holding a child. A woman, later identified as 19-year-old Ashley Hope Johns, went back into the house.

The man told officers they had gotten into an argument about the condition of the home. He said he stepped outside to cool off and get fresh air while holding their infant. That’s when Johns allegedly followed him and hit him in the back of the head.

Police say Johns admitted to hitting him and said she was frustrated because people had been calling her house unclean. She told officers that their comments made her angry.

Johns was arrested and charged with domestic violence and assault, both misdemeanors. She was taken to the Lorain County Jail and held without bond. Her case is scheduled for arraignment.

The man declined to press charges, but police continued with the case due to the nature of the assault and because a child was present. Officers said the incident was recorded on body camera.

  1. Don’t know the whole story, but it seems like jail without bond for misdemeanor might be pretty harsh.
Did she hit him with her hand? A baseball bat, a pan….?
Just holding an infant doesn’t mean the baby was in any danger.
Maybe she works 12 hours a day, and he doesn’t work at all? Maybe he’s just a lazy do nothing?
    A lot of unknowns…
