Stabbing Suspect Apprehended After Fleeing Elyria Scene

ELYRIA, Ohio — A 25-year-old Elyria man is in custody after allegedly stabbing another man during a dispute Thursday evening, then attempting to flee the scene on foot.

Elyria police responded to the 6200 block of West River Road South at approximately 6:49 p.m. on June 19, where they found a 25-year-old man on the front porch of a residence with a stab wound to the chest. The victim was transported by LifeCare EMS to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. His condition has not been released.

According to investigators, the stabbing followed an argument that had been escalating throughout the day. Witnesses said the suspect, Julian L. Brooks, fled the area on foot after the incident. Officers, with assistance from a Lorain Police K9 unit, located Brooks a short time later near Sommer Way. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Brooks was booked into the Lorain County Jail early Friday morning and classified as a maximum-security inmate. He is charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and obstructing official business, a second-degree misdemeanor. He was arraigned in Elyria Municipal Court on June 20.

Court records show Brooks has a history of prior arrests in Lorain County, including charges related to parole violations, receiving stolen property, making false alarms, and weapons offenses.

“We commend our officers and detectives for their swift response and thorough investigation that led to the suspect’s apprehension without further risk to public safety,” said Elyria Police Chief James Welsh.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Detective Anthony DeMarco at 440-326-1201 or ademarco@cityofelyria.org.
