A dramatic scene unfolded Thursday morning at Sycamore Suites in Elyria when a man jumped through a second-story glass window—twice—during an active police response.
Just after 11:00 a.m., Elyria Police and EMS were dispatched to the hotel, located on Midway Boulevard, following a 911 call reporting a person who had jumped from a second-story window. When officers arrived, they found the man—identified as 25-year-old Tyree Gibbs of Oberlin—had returned to the second floor.
As police attempted to make contact, Gibbs suddenly launched himself headfirst through a glass window. Officers immediately intervened and took him into custody. He sustained visible injuries and was treated at the scene before being transported to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center, then transferred to a Cleveland hospital for further care.
The original call was reportedly related to a domestic disturbance. Gibbs is now facing felony charges of vandalism and possession of a controlled substance in Elyria Municipal Court.
During the investigation, two additional individuals were also taken into custody on unrelated drug and obstruction charges.
This is not the first time police have responded to disturbances at the hotel, which has been the site of several past incidents. Thursday’s situation, however, quickly escalated into one of the more chaotic episodes in recent memory, ending in broken glass, bloodied injuries, and multiple arrests.
Elyria Police have not disclosed the motive behind Gibbs’ actions or whether drugs or mental health factors played a role. Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact the department as the case develops.
