Swatting Call Near Elyria School Leads to Prison Sentence

ELYRIA — A 33-year-old Sheffield Village man has been sentenced to prison after a false report of an armed individual triggered a large-scale police response in Elyria earlier this year.

Jeremy R. Oster was sentenced to a total of 24 months in prison following a swatting incident that occurred on January 9, 2026. According to court proceedings, Oster placed a call reporting that an individual with a rifle was in the area of a PNC Bank ATM on 2nd Street.

The call prompted a significant emergency response involving multiple agencies, including local police, the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Authorities also shut down surrounding roadways and impacted nearby businesses during the response.

During sentencing, the court noted the level of concern caused by the report, particularly given the proximity to a school and surrounding businesses. Officials stated the nature of the call led to widespread panic among those in the area.

No armed individual was found at the scene.

Investigators later traced the call back to Oster, who was subsequently located and stopped by law enforcement on Leavitt Road.

According to statements made in court, the incident was believed to have been intentional. The judge indicated the call was made as part of an effort to divert attention from other activity, which the court described as involving drug-related conduct. Additional details about that activity were not specified in the proceedings.

Oster pleaded guilty to charges related to the incident, including inducing panic and swatting. Jail records also list a charge of tampering with evidence tied to the case.

In handing down the sentence, the court determined that a prison term was appropriate due to the seriousness of the offense, the impact on the public, and the resources required to respond. The judge also stated that community control sanctions were not suitable in this case.

Oster will serve 24 months in prison, with multiple counts ordered to run concurrently.

Court records show the incident took place in the early morning hours of January 9, with the arrest occurring shortly after. Oster was booked into the Lorain County Jail on January 10.
