A man was arrested in Elyria on Saturday morning after officers found him unconscious behind the wheel of a running vehicle and later discovered 8.2 grams of crack cocaine in his possession.
According to a report from the Elyria Police Department, officers responded to the intersection of East Avenue and 4th Street around 8:30 a.m. on May 3 after receiving a call about a male slumped over in the driver’s seat of a silver Volkswagen. The vehicle was stopped in the westbound lane, still running and blocking traffic.
When officers arrived, they found 38-year-old Kardeane Clifton Dukes inside the car, unresponsive. After multiple verbal commands and knocking on the window failed to wake him, officers used a siren and loud horn. Dukes eventually woke up but refused repeated commands to open the door, allegedly yelling “NO!” at officers.
Officers noted that Dukes was moving his hands in and out of his pants and ignoring commands to stop. After he attempted to drive away, coming to a stop near a patrol car, officers broke the window and forcibly removed him from the vehicle using a takedown technique.
During a search of the vehicle, police located a bag in the center console containing a white rock-like substance, which tested positive for crack cocaine. The drugs, weighing approximately 8.2 grams, were entered into evidence.
Dukes, who exhibited signs of intoxication including slurred speech, pinpoint pupils, and the odor of alcohol, was arrested and transported to the Lorain County Jail. He faces charges including possession of crack cocaine, OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired), and obstructing official business. He is being held without bond pending a court appearance.
