LORAIN, OH — A 21-year-old Lorain man is being held without bond after police say surveillance video captured him making violent threats during an incident at a Middle Avenue apartment on Thursday evening.
According to a patrol report, officers from the Elyria Police Department responded to the apartment complex around 8:46 p.m. on May 29 for a menacing complaint. The caller, identified as Zylaya Glover, reported that the man had taken a phone and threatened to return with a gun.
When officers arrived, they spoke with Glover and another woman who remained inside the apartment. Glover told police that the man, who is the father of her child, came over to drop off diapers but was not supposed to enter the apartment. She stated that after he entered without permission and refused to leave, she exited the apartment and began monitoring her indoor security camera.
Police say Glover showed them the footage, which appeared to show the man speaking to someone on a phone, stating he believed he was being set up and needed a gun. In the video, the man allegedly walked over to the second woman, took her phone from her hands by force, and left the apartment. According to the report, the man made several threatening statements during the recording, including that he was going to “get a gun” and “smoke both of them.”
The suspect was located nearby shortly after the incident, riding in the front passenger seat of a black Ford Fusion. Officers say he was detained without incident. During a search of the vehicle, police recovered two iPhones from beneath the passenger seat. One of the phones reportedly belonged to the woman seen in the video, and the other was identified as belonging to the child. Both devices were returned.
While in custody and seated in the back of a marked patrol car, police say the man shouted out of the open window toward the apartment complex that he was “bonding out.” Officers stated in the report that this raised concerns he might attempt to follow through on his earlier threats.
Following a discussion with a sergeant and communication with the court, a no-bond order was issued. The man was booked at the Lorain County Jail on charges of aggravated menacing and theft. He is scheduled to appear in Elyria Municipal Court.
The incident remains under investigation.
