Lorain City Schools Board of Education: July 2025 Meeting Recap

Lorain City Schools Board of Education: July 2025 Meeting Recap

The Lorain City Schools Board of Education held three public meetings in July 2025: on July 7, July 14, and July 29. Key decisions covered student transportation, levy renewals, staffing updates, and infrastructure repairs.

July 7, 2025 – Special Meeting
In a brief morning session, the Board voted to authorize the purchase of ten school buses, allowing the district to bring transportation services in-house after relying on a contractor. The motion passed 4–1, with Board Member Nazario voting against it. Superintendent Jeff Graham noted the goal was to increase reliability and local control.
The Board also approved additional personnel items and then entered executive session to discuss employment matters. No action was taken afterward.

July 14, 2025 – Regular Meeting
The Board approved several financial items, including two resolutions to place levy renewals on the November ballot. One covers the current expense levy, and the other is for the emergency levy. Both were described as renewals, not tax increases. Due to property value increases over time, the millage rate has decreased, but the revenue amount remains the same.

Treasurer David Hall praised the district’s long-standing partnership with the IAV, which donated more than $11,000 to local schools. Staffing updates revealed 57 new teachers have been hired for the upcoming year.

Superintendent Graham also gave a facilities update, reporting that unexpected subsurface water issues at Southview Middle School’s parking lot would require additional base repair work. The Board approved the necessary funds to ensure the lot would be ready for the start of school.

Board Member Barbie Washington was nominated for a recognition award from the Ohio School Boards Association for completing all required training. The Board approved the nomination.

Missy D’Angelus, speaking on behalf of the Lorain Schools Alumni Association, thanked the district for its support of their recent Distinguished Alumni Breakfast and scholarship program. She noted that applications for the 2026 awards are now open.

The meeting concluded with an executive session for employment matters. No action followed.

July 29, 2025 – Special Meeting
In this 9 a.m. session, the Board finalized a decision to close the district offices on Wednesday, July 31, in solidarity with the Lorain Police Department, following the tragic death of Officer Kenneth Kornowski.

The Board then went into executive session to discuss employment and negotiations. After returning, members approved a slate of personnel matters.
