Elyria Speedway Employee Arrested After Police Say He Took Nearly $5,700

ELYRIA — An Elyria man was arrested after police say he took nearly $5,700 from his employer by running fake refunds at a local Speedway.

Police said 24-year-old Aaron M. Weber was arrested Feb. 20 at the Speedway at 990 E. Broad St. He is charged with felony theft.

How police say it happened

Officers were called to the store that morning after Speedway supervisors reported suspicious refund activity involving an employee.

According to the police report, Weber allegedly ran refunds for coffee without actual returns, then kept the cash. The report says the transactions were done in a way that would not automatically create a shortage in the register.

Speedway provided records showing the refunds totaled $5,698.68 and dated from Jan. 6 through Feb. 16. Police said video evidence supported what store officials reported, and the report notes a wider review could uncover additional incidents.

What Weber told officers

Police said Weber agreed to speak with officers after being advised of his rights. The report says Weber admitted he had been doing the refunds for several weeks, usually in $50 to $60 amounts, though some transactions were as high as $300.

According to the report, Weber told officers he was behind on rent and bills and feared becoming homeless. He also told officers he had planned to resign and work out repayment.

Police said Weber was taken to the Lorain County Jail, where he was held without bond while awaiting a court appearance. The report says Speedway terminated Weber’s employment and barred him from returning to the property.
