Preliminary hearing set for Aug. 31

LORAIN — Court records list a not guilty plea for a Lorain man accused of shooting a live-in family member in the face Friday.

A criminal complaint filed Monday identifies the defendant as Jonathan Lopez-Hance, 40. Lorain police initially identified him as Jonathan Lopez.

Lopez-Hance faces one count of felonious assault involving a weapon, a second-degree felony. The charge alleges he caused or attempted to cause physical harm with a deadly weapon or dangerous ordnance.

The Lorain Municipal Court docket lists Aug. 24 as the plea date. Judge Linda Webber scheduled a preliminary hearing for 1 p.m. Aug. 31.

At that hearing, the court could determine whether sufficient evidence exists to send the felony case to Lorain County Common Pleas Court. The hearing would not be held if a grand jury indicts Lopez-Hance first.

Court records list Lopez-Hance as being held at the Lorain County Correctional Facility. An active temporary protection order was served on him Monday. Denise Gail Wilms is listed as his defense attorney.

Police said officers responded at 5:22 p.m. Aug. 21 to the 500 block of West 18th Street following a report of a shooting.

Officers found a 63-year-old woman outside the home with an apparent small-caliber gunshot wound to her face. Police provided emergency medical care until paramedics arrived.

The woman was transported to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. She was conscious and responsive when she left the scene, police said. An updated condition was not available.

Police arrested Lopez-Hance following an initial investigation and an interview with the woman. Investigators described him as a live-in family member.

The police department initially said Lopez-Hance was being held on felonious-assault and domestic-violence charges and that additional charges were expected.

The municipal court docket reviewed Monday lists only the felonious-assault count. No domestic-violence charge currently appears in that case.

The allegations remain pending, and no disposition has been entered.
