Lorain City Council Honors LCCC Men’s Basketball Team After Championship Season

Lorain City Council recognized the Lorain County Community College men’s basketball team during its April 6 meeting, honoring the program for its championship season and highlighting its strong ties to the local community.

Councilman Angel Arroyo brought members of the team and coaching staff before council, referring to them as champions following their NJCAA Division III Region 12 title. Arroyo emphasized the team’s local roots, noting that seven players are products of Lorain-area schools, including six graduates of Lorain High School and one from Clearview High School.

A resolution formally commending the team was presented and passed unanimously by council.

During the recognition, several council members spoke about the importance of education, stressing that academic success plays a key role alongside athletics. Some members also referenced Issue 5, a school levy, underscoring the importance of supporting local education systems.

Head Coach Marty Eggleston addressed council and attendees, focusing on the long-term impact of athletics beyond the court. He described basketball as a vehicle rather than the destination, explaining that the lessons learned through the sport help prepare players for life after their playing careers.

Eggleston said the young men on the team will go on to become fathers and leaders, and that the structure, discipline, and accountability built through basketball provide a strong foundation for those future responsibilities.

The recognition highlighted not only the team’s athletic success, but also its role in shaping student-athletes and reflecting the broader values of the Lorain community.
