Lorain County is in mourning this week following the unexpected passing of Bobby Oliver, 35, a local man who became a national figure in 2020 after a video of him confronting racial slurs at an Elyria Circle-K went viral. Oliver, who often went by the nickname “Barry Allen” and was affectionately known online as “Mr. TeaKO” or “The Twisted Tea Guy,” died on Saturday, March 22nd, leaving behind seven children. The Lorain County Coroner, Dr. Frank Miller, has confirmed Oliver’s death and is currently awaiting test results to determine the cause.

Oliver’s confrontation in December 2020 captured the attention of millions. The video showed Oliver challenging a white man who was repeatedly using a racial slur against Black employees and eventually striking him with a can of Twisted Tea after the man kicked at it. The incident sparked widespread discussion online, with many praising Oliver for standing up against racial abuse. Speaking to Mark One Sports shortly after the video went viral, Oliver explained that he had initially tried to ignore the slurs but felt compelled to intervene when the employees, who were Black, appeared uncomfortable but unable to speak up for fear of their jobs.

Beyond the viral moment, Oliver’s family remembers him as a loving and devoted father. According to his obituary from the Liston Funeral Home, “Bobby’s children were his life, making sure their needs were met before his own.” He was also a fan of “The Flash” and found peace in late-night walks while listening to music. Oliver was preceded in death by his infant son, Bobby Oliver Jr., last year, and will be buried alongside his mother and son in Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria. A GoFundMe page has been established to help support his seven children and cover funeral expenses. As of Thursday evening, the community had already begun to rally, contributing to the fund.
