Cleveland Adds Depth Ahead of Postseason
The Cleveland Cavaliers announced the signing of forward Chukwuma Julian “Chuma” Okeke to a standard contract on April 3, 2025. The move fills the team’s final roster spot as they prepare for the upcoming NBA playoffs.
Okeke’s Journey to Cleveland
Okeke, a versatile player who can play both power forward and small forward, was a highly regarded prospect. He achieved significant success at Westlake High School in Atlanta, winning a state championship and earning the title of Mr. Georgia Basketball. His collegiate career at Auburn University saw him set freshman rebounding records and develop into a key player, earning All-Tournament honors in the SEC in 2019. However, a knee injury cut his sophomore season short during the NCAA Tournament.
NBA Draft and Early Career
Despite the injury, the Orlando Magic selected Okeke with the 16th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He played for the Magic until 2024, showcasing his potential in various roles. The 2024-2025 season saw Okeke navigate several team changes. He had brief stints with the New York Knicks and their G League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks, before signing two 10-day contracts with the Philadelphia 76ers in February and March of 2025.
Providing Versatility and Depth
Okeke now joins a Cavaliers team looking to make a deep run in the playoffs. His ability to play multiple forward positions, coupled with his athleticism and rebounding skills, will provide valuable depth for Head Coach Kenny Atkinson. His experience as a former first-round pick and his recent G League performance suggest he can contribute when the team calls upon him.
Playoff Implications
This late-season addition underscores the Cavaliers’ commitment to strengthening their roster as they enter the postseason. Okeke offers another option for the team and could provide crucial insurance and flexibility as they face the challenges of playoff basketball.
