Flames Tear Through Hilton Hotel Under Construction in Elyria

ELYRIA, Ohio — Firefighters from several departments responded to a large fire early Monday morning at a hotel under construction in Elyria.

The fire broke out at the Home2 Suites by Hilton construction site on Travelers Lane near Midway Mall on Monday, Aug. 17. Fire crews responded to the property around 2 a.m., according to Cleveland 19 News.

Video from the scene showed flames coming from the building as firefighters worked to bring the fire under control. WKYC reported flames reaching approximately 10 feet above the roof.

The building was vacant and still under construction when the fire occurred. No injuries had been reported as of Monday morning.

The four-story hotel has been under construction for nearly two years. Cleveland 19 reported the project cost at least $7 million and was scheduled to open Oct. 1.

The hotel is being developed by Sunrise Hospitality, which also operates the Hampton Inn & Suites and Courtyard by Marriott in Elyria. The project was planned to include roughly 150 rooms.

Fire crews remained at the scene late Monday morning as firefighters continued working at the property.

The cause of the fire had not been released as of Monday morning.

Additional information, including the extent of the damage and what effect the fire could have on the hotel’s construction schedule, was not immediately available.
