Skywatchers in Lorain County are in for a celestial treat this weekend as April’s full moon, known as the Pink Moon, rises on Saturday, April 12, at 8:22 p.m. While it won’t actually appear pink, the moon will be glowing at its biggest and brightest of the month—and locals have plenty of great spots to watch it.

What Is the Pink Moon?

The name “Pink Moon” doesn’t come from its color but from the bloom of pink wildflowers, especially phlox, that mark early spring. This year’s full moon is also a micromoon, meaning it’s at its farthest point from Earth, making it appear slightly smaller than usual.

Still, with clear skies in the forecast, it promises a peaceful and picture-worthy night for moon gazing.

Top Viewing Locations in Lorain County

If you’re planning to take in the view, consider heading to these top open-sky locations around Lorain:

  • Lakeview Park (Lorain) – Offers a wide, unobstructed view of the horizon over Lake Erie, perfect for watching the moon rise.
  • Black River Landing (Downtown Lorain) – A peaceful riverside venue with good visibility and nearby benches.
  • Miller Road Park (Avon Lake) – Another waterfront option with a clear eastern view, ideal for moon photos.
  • Main Street Beach (Vermilion) – Though technically outside Lorain, this beach offers stunning lakefront skies for those willing to take a short drive west.

When to Look

The moon will rise shortly after sunset and be most dramatic as it breaks the horizon. That’s your best chance for photos, as the moon appears larger near the horizon due to an optical illusion.

Bring a camera, a blanket, and maybe a thermos of coffee—it’s a perfect night to sit still and look up.

WHAT LORAIN RESIDENTS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE PINK MICROMOON

By Erik Jones, Editor – Lorain Daily

The full moon on Saturday, April 12 is getting a lot of buzz, but what’s really going on? Here’s a simple guide for Lorain County residents curious about the Pink Moon—and why it matters.

Why Is It Called the “Pink” Moon?

It’s not pink! The name comes from an early-blooming wildflower, moss phlox, that shows up this time of year. Native Americans and early settlers often named full moons after seasonal events—April’s moon just happened to line up with these pink blooms.

What’s a “Micromoon”?

This moon is also a micromoon, which means it’s farther away from Earth than usual—about 252,000 miles. That makes it look slightly smaller and dimmer than a supermoon, but still beautiful.

Think of it as a peaceful, slower moment in the sky—not flashy, but quietly impressive.

Why It Matters

This moon holds extra meaning for some people. It’s known as the Paschal Moon, which helps determine the date of Easter each year. It also kicks off Passover in the Jewish calendar.

Some believe full moons bring emotional energy, especially this one, which falls in the zodiac sign of Libra—a time said to be about balance, relationships, and reflection.

Whether you believe in astrology or not, it’s a good night to slow down, go outside, and simply take in the view.
