Lorain High Graduation Moved Indoors Due To Severe Weather Concerns

LORAIN — Lorain City Schools has moved the 2026 Lorain High School Commencement Ceremony indoors due to the strong likelihood of severe weather this weekend, creating another adjustment for seniors and families who have already seen the graduation schedule changed once before.

The district announced that commencement will now be held inside the Lorain High School Gymnasium.

Another Change For Families

The latest change follows an earlier decision in April, when Lorain City Schools previously changed the graduation date from Tuesday, May 26, to Saturday, May 23, at 10 a.m. at George Daniel Field. At the time, the district said the change was made in coordination with the City of Lorain and the Lorain Police Department to improve safety, support and police staffing for the ceremony.

Now, weather concerns have forced the district to move the ceremony indoors.

“We understand how meaningful this day is for our graduates and families, and we sincerely apologize for the many changes and adjustments that have had to be made throughout the planning process,” Lorain City Schools said in its message to families.

The district said the decisions were not made lightly and that its priority remains ensuring a safe, organized and memorable celebration for students.

Limited Seating And Overflow Viewing

Because of limited indoor seating capacity, each graduate will receive five free tickets for seating inside the gymnasium. Seniors may also purchase up to four additional tickets for family members and supporters, but those guests will be seated in overflow viewing areas.

The district said overflow viewing areas will be available in both the auditorium and cafeteria, where the ceremony will be livestreamed in real time.

Seniors are able to pick up their five free gymnasium tickets today, May 21, and purchase up to four additional overflow tickets, according to the district.

The indoor move may be understandable given the weather forecast, but it also comes after families were already asked to adjust plans following the earlier schedule change. For some families, the latest update may add to frustration over travel plans, seating limits and who will be able to watch the ceremony from inside the gym.

The district acknowledged the disappointment and asked families for patience as officials respond to the weather forecast.

“We recognize this may be disappointing for many families, and we truly appreciate your patience, understanding, and flexibility as we navigate circumstances beyond our control due to the weather forecast,” the district said.

Lorain City Schools said the goal remains to celebrate the Class of 2026 safely while honoring the importance of the day for graduates and their families.
