LORAIN — A $15,000 grant from Norfolk Southern will help the Lorain Police Department fund the purchase of a new Command Operations Vehicle, according to information provided by Capt. Jacob Morris.
The vehicle has not yet been purchased, and the department does not yet have a final total cost for the project.
Morris said the vehicle is not dedicated to the department’s drone program, though it will have the capability to monitor drones during incidents. Instead, it will function as a mobile command post for active and large-scale public safety responses.
The department expects the vehicle to be used during major incidents such as hostage or barricaded gunman situations, high-level investigations and large-scale events that are still in progress.
From the vehicle, incident commanders would be able to gather real-time information and give direction to assistant commanders at the scene.
The vehicle has not yet been purchased, so the department does not have a final total cost. Morris said Norfolk Southern’s $15,000 contribution is appreciated and will help the department move forward with a project aimed at providing a high level of service to the Lorain community.
